Abstract

A filler having a mean particle size of 100-2000 <\>rA is treated with 0.005 to 10% by weight of a polymerizable substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon having one or more C-C double bonds and a b.p. of from -110 DEG to +250 DEG C. at a temperature and pressure below the critical temperature and pressure. The filler may be carbon black (preferably furnace carbon black), dehydrated silicic acids and silicates or carbonates of the metals of Groups II and III of the Mendel<\>aeeff Periodic System. The polymerizable hydrocarbon may be styrene or a -methyl styrene. The impregnation may be carried out by loading the filler, which is being continuously agitated, with the polymerizable hydrocarbon in the vapour phase. The filler may be incorporated into a polybutadiene or ethylene propylene rubber.ALSO:A filler having a mean particle size of 100-2000 <\>rA is treated with 0.005 to 10% by weight of a polymerizable substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon having one or more C-C double bonds and a b.p. of from -110 DEG C. to +250 DEG C. at a temperature and pressure below the critical temperature and pressure. The filler may be carbon black (preferably furnace carbon black), dehydrated silicic acids and silicates or carbonates of the metals of groups II and III of the Mendeleef Periodic System. The polymerizable hydrocarbon may be styrene or a -methyl styrene. The impregnation may be carried out by loading the filler, which is being continuously agitated, with the polymerizable hydrocarbon in the vapour phase. The polymerizable organic compound may be ethylene, propylene, butene, isobutene, butadiene, chlorobutadiene, isoprene, hexadiene, octadiene, cyclooctadiene, cyclohexylnorbornene, vinylacetylene, vinylchloride, vinylbenzene, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and their esters, olefin oxides e.g. ethylene oxide. The filler may be incorporated into a polybutadiene or ethylene propylene rubber.
