Abstract

A catalytic composition suitable for polymerizing olefines comprises metallic lithium or sodium dispersed on an anhydrous potassium compound, usually K2CO3. Usually the anhydrous potassium compound is treated with molten lithium or sodium such that 1-20% of alkali metal is dispersed on the potassium compound. Other specified anhydrous potassium compounds are the silicate, hydroxide, sulphate and halides. Olefines having at least 3 carbon atoms per molecule may be polymerized alone or with at least one other polymerizable or copolymerizable compound in the presence of such a catalyst. Specified olefines are propylene, isobutylene, butadiene and isoprene. Examples generally describe the dimerization of propylene providing as principal product 4-methyl pentene-1. The catalyst used in Example 3 consists of sodium on Na2CO3, CaCO3 and Na2SO4. Example 6 describes the dimerization of isobutylene to yield 244 trimethylpentenes-1 and-2. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of potassium alkoxides as anhydrous potassium compounds and also to dimerizing styrene. Specification 824,917 is referred to.
