Abstract

Alkylated monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are de-alkylated by treating a feed containing such hydrocarbons at 500-600 DEG , preferably 540-570 DEG C., and above 100, preferably 200-300 ats. with hydrogen in the presence of a supported or unsupported catalyst consisting substantially of an aluminium phosphate. Toluene, xylenes, ethylbenzene and trimethylbenzenes are suitable initial materials, also mixtures derived from petroleum, coal, and coal tar as by distillation or extracts thereof. Paraffins, naphthenes, olefins, and di-olefins may also be present. Fractions of cracked petrols boiling at 125-150 DEG and 150-175 DEG C., are specified. Dehydrogenation and cyclization may also occur. Aluminium orthophosphate, alone or admixed or supported on alumina, silica or compounds thereof such as aluminium silicates is a suitable catalyst. Batch or continuous operation is possible. In an example, xylenes are treated at different feed rates, the catalyst being prepared by precipitating with ammonia an aqueous solution of equimolar aluminium nitrate- and orthophosphoric acid, extruding, drying, and calcining. Increasing the feed rate lowers the yield of lower aromatic hydrocarbons.
