Abstract

[Also in Division D1] An assembly of pre-formed helical rods for use as line-gripping means, for example, as in Fig. 7, is characterized in that the preformed helical configuration is at the two ends 11b, 11c of the assembly and that intermediate these ends there is a bight portion 11 free of a complete helical revolution. The pre-formed helical elements are in a set of less than half a lay. Making the pre-formed helical element.- A plurality of pre-formed helical resilient metal elements are assembled into a set of less than half a lay and of uniform helical pitch and diameter throughout its length, an intermediate portion of the set is then twisted beyond the torsional elastic limit thereof in a direction opposite to the pitch of the helix so as to straighten said portion, tension being applied to said intermediate portion during the straightening thereof, and thereafter the straightened portion is bent to form a bight. The plurality of helical wires are bonded to each other on their inner surface by adhesive (30), Fig. 13 (not shown), and after the adhesive is set an abrasive, such as aluminium oxide (31), Fig. 13, may be secured to said inner surface.
