Abstract

538,275. Making barbed wire. ABBOTT, H. A. Dec. 27, 1939, No. 32895. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1939. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group I] A single strand, barbed wire is made by forming at intervals in the strand a kink or set of adjacent opposed kinks, applying transversely to the kink or kinks a pair of barbforming pieces bending these into U-form in opposite directions along the strand, then bending the limbs of the U outwardly at an intermediate position and finally twisting the outwardly bent parts round the strand barb leaving the extreme ends extending outwardly in the desired respective positions. The strand is kinked by passing between rolls with co-acting projections and recesses shaped to produce kinks without undue-weakness at the bends. The barb pieces are then fed transversely into the kinks, then bent into U-form and part of the limbs bent outwardly in opposite directions as shown in Fig. 6. The outwardly bent ends of the two barb pieces 16, 17 are finally twisted on the wire strand 12 to the form shown in Fig. 7 with the extreme ends extending outwardly. Fig. 11 shows the barb pieces applied to a single kink. The strand may be of high tensile steel wire and this is not weakened in the manufacture of the barbed wire since heat is not applied. Tension on the strand further tightens the barb pieces.
