SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,927, dated March 10, 1891.

Be it known that I, ALONZO B. WooDARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at l-Iornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in'FencingStrands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the type of fencing-strand described and shown in Letters Patent No. 433,940, and has for its object to avoid passing the serpentine wires between the two spirally twisted wires; to provide a novel connection of the serpentine wires with the twisted wires; to facilitate the manufacture by providing a construction whereby it is possible to apply the serpentine wires to a pair of wires which have previously been twisted together; to avoid the necessity of twisting the two wires as the serpentine wires are laid in looped form between the former; to provide a construction whereby the serpentine wires are coiled upon the exterior of the previously-twisted wires to bind the latter together, and finally to provide a novel, durable, efficient, and ornamental wire fencing-strand, which can be conveniently manufactured by simplified machinery. To accomplish all these objects my invention involves the features of construction, the combination or arrangement of parts, and the principles of operation hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a view, on an enlarged scale, showing a portion of a fencing-strand constructed accordingto my invention.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will-now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawing, where- The numerals 1 and 2 indicate two wires which are spirally twisted together throughout their length, and the numerals 3 and at wires 9 from each other by portions of the serpentine wires, being coiled, as at 6, around the exterior of the spirally- twisted wires 1 and 2, by which construction the spirally-twisted wires are firmly bound together, while the looped form of the serpentine wires is preserved and they are rigidly and permanently connected with the spirally-twisted wires by the coiled portions 6, above referred to.
In the manufacture of this improved fencing-strand the wires 1 and 2 can be spirally twisted together and subsequently the serpentine wires can be applied thereto. By this means the manufacture of the fencingstrand is materially facilitated and simplified machinery rendered possible.
The serpentine wires at the commencement of the manufacture are first coiled upon the exterior of the spirally-twisted wires. They are then carried laterally in opposite directions to form a loop and are then brought toward the spirally-twisted wires, and the wires 3 and 4 are both carried in the same direction around the exterior of the spirallytwisted wires to form acoiled portion 6. The operation is repeated for each looped portion 5, and by this means the loops are separated from each other by the coiled portions 6, which coiled portions, however, form integral parts of the wires which form the loops.

The present invention provides a fencingstrand which is strong, substantial, and ornamental, and can be manufactured by simplified machinery, thereby reducing its cost of production while enabling it to be more conveniently manufactured by mechanical means.
