UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
WILLIAM D. TABER, OF ROCKVILLE, RHODE ISLAND.
RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,221, dated October 19, 1886.
Application filed February 2, 1886. Serial No. 190,622. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. TABER, of Rockville, in the county of \Vashington and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Rein Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the construction of a rein-holder made from a single piece of wire bent to form loops by which the device is caught upon the dash-board, and loops within which the reins may be inserted and held to place by the tension of the wire, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a view of a portion of the inner face of a dash-board provided with my improved form of rein-holder, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
In constructing such a reinholder as is illustrated in the drawings, I take a piece of stiff elastic wire and bend it at the points I) and b, so that it will project at right angles from the central portion, a, which central portion is preferably about four and a half or five inches in length. The wire is bent over and downward at c and 0, so that the downwardly-extending ends will run about parallel wit-h the upwardly extending portions (1 and d. The wire is then bent inward and upward ate and e, and then backward and downward at f and f, the downwardly-extending portions 9 and 9 being about parallel with the portions (1 and d. At It and h the wire is bent inward toward the center of the main portion a, and just above the center of this portion a the wires are slightly twisted, the one about the other, so that as they cross the extending ends of the one will lie close to the body of the other, the wires being finally bent at i ijust inside of the points I) b, the two endsof the wire being brought together just back of the center of a, where they are united by a sleeve, k, connection between the parts being made by solder or by any mechanical means desired.
By bending the wire as described I form two loops, A and A, designed for engagement with the dash-board D, as clearly indicated in the drawings, and two otherloops, B and B, which are designed to hold the reins G 0 when such reins are placed in the position shown in the drawings. Both lengths of wire constituting the loops B and B are bent outward at 'i i, the idea being to permit of an easy introduc tion of the reins.
With this rein-holder a double automatic clamping device is provided, the parts being so formed that the holder is clamped to the dashboard by the loops A A, while the reins are clamped and held by the holder through the action of the loops B 13, all parts of the holder being formed from a single length of wire.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a rein-holder formed of a piece of wire having a central portion, (1 bent at its opposite ends, b b, to form upward-extending arms (I (1, then over and downward at c c, then inward and upward at e c, then backward and downward,
as at f f, thus forming two loops to embrace the edge of the dash-board, the downwardextending arms 9 9 being bent inward toward the center of the portion a, and there crossed to form two rein-clamps, the wires being finally bent beyond their point of crossing, as at i i, inward and connected, as at K, substantially as set forth.
