No. 447,504. P44411444 Mar. 3, 1891 NITED STATES ARCIIIBALD G. BOIVMAN, OF JOLIETVILLE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PHIDILLER S. \VOODS, OF LEBANON, INDIANA.
CLOTHES-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,504, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed June 18, 1890.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD G. Bow- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at J olietville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usefulImprovementsin Clothes-Pins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Wlll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of clothes-pins which is made of wire, and has for its object the construction of such a device that will be certain in its action, and that can readily be applied to and detached from lines of various sizes, and which can be cheaply made.
The invention consists in a clamp constructed of a single piece of wire which has the desired stiffness. One end of this wire is bent into a loop, which is then bent so as to form a hook. The other end of the wire is then bent to form a finger or jaw which will press the line and the surrounding fabric against the shortlimb of the hook, and thereby secure the said fabric in the desired place.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure l is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section showing the device in position to secure the fabric to the sustaining-line.
.The device is made from any suitable wire of the required length and having the necessary stiffness, beirg bent over dies or formers or otherwise made to conform to the desired shape. A loop is first form-ed of one end of the wire, and which is then bent to form a hook having the long'and short limbs A and B respectively connected by the intermediate springs C, forming the bend of the hook. These springs are so made as to hold the short limb B parallel with and a short distance from Serial No. 3 55, 849. (N0 model.)
the longer limb A. This limb A consists of the two sides a and a. The lower end of the side a is bent at right angles to the main part of said side and extended a short distance to the side a, around which it is wrapped asufficient number of times, generally once, to secure the two sides together. The other end of the wire is bent to form a finger or jaw D, which extends upward between the members of the hook, and is connected to the limb A by means of the coil-spring E, which is formed by wrapping the wire around the bent lower end of the side a of said limb A. This spring will force the finger or jaw D outward against the turn in the lower end of the limb B.
To apply the pin the jaw D is forced backward between the sides of the longer member of the hook, which is placed in position over the line sustaining the fabric, (see Fig. 2,) and then the jaw is released and clamps the line, and thereby firmly securing the fabric. The line will be crimped to a slight degree by being slightly forced between the sides of the shorter member of the hook, which will prevent the sliding of the fabric if the line should be sagged in its middle portion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a clothes-pin formed of a single piece of wire which is bent at one end to form a hook having its members of a different length and connected by an intermediate coiled spring, the finger formed of the other end of said wire and connected with the longer member of the hook by a coiled spring which forces said finger outward against the shorter member of the hook, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AROl-IIBALD G. BOWMAN.
