UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. BRIGHT, OF SHELBYVILLE, KENTUCKY.
WIRE-HOOP-FASTENING TOOL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. BRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire- Hoop-Fastening Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is a device for use in twisting wires, and more especially adapted for fastening wire hoops on tobacco hogsheads and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which may be conveniently manipulated and which will effectively twist together two wire ends.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a View illustrating the use of the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the body member or bar; Figs. 3 and 4 are top and side views of the complete tool provided with cam levers for clamping the wire ends.
My invention relates to tools for engaging the two ends of a wire hoop, or the ends of two pieces of wire, and to be rotated to twist the wire ends together; and said tool comprises a lever bar 1, provided with a straight central portion 1, and off-set ends 1 providing oppositely projecting handles 2, and said straight central portion of thebar is provided with wire receiving openings 8, in the line of the bar and extending therethrough. Said central portion is also provided with wire gripping levers 4L, pivoted between said openings 3 and the oflf-sets 1 of the lever bar 1, and said wire gripping levers 4 are provided with flattened enlarged inner end portions which bear on said central portion of said bar and are provided with curved cam edges 7. The gripping levers are provided with handles 6, which are arranged parallel with and closely adjacent to the oil-sets 1 of the bar 1. The enlarged Specification of Letters Patent. v

are passed through the guide openings 3 in the bar and the latter is then turned to twist the ends together as indicated at 'w in Fig. 1.
When the wire ends are engaged by the clamping cams they will be effectively prevented t'rom slipping during the operation.
I have found in practice that my improved tool is exceedingly effective in accomplishing the intended purpose and that it enables hogsheads and the like to be quickly and securely wired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
The herein described wire hoop fastening tool, comprising a lever bar formed with a straight central portion and off-set ends providing oppositely projecting handles, the straight central portion of said bar having wire-receiving openings in the line of the bar and extending therethrough, and wire gripping levers pivoted between said openings and the otf-set ends of the bar, said wire gripping levers having flattened enlarged inner end portions which bear on said central portion of said bar and are pro vided with cam edges, the handles of said gripping levers being parallel with and adjacent to the ofi-sets of the bar, said enlarged end portions of said levers being movable with their curved cam edges across the said wire-receiving openings in the lever bar to coact with the edges of the openings in gripping the ends of the wire hoop.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES C. BRIGHT.
