[Also in Division B3. Each link of a heavy stud link chain, e.g. for large ships' anchors, comprises two unequal lengths of steel bar, the longer length 1, of round cross-seotion, forming the oval part of the link and being fixed at its ends to opposite sides of one end of the shorter length 2, which is of round or square cross-section and forms the stud, the other end of the length 2 engaging the centre of the length 1. In manufacture, the bars are heated to 600‹ C. and one end of the straight bar (1) is welded to one side of one end of the bar (2) at right angles thereto (Fig. 1, not shown). The bar (1) is then bent to its final oval form, at the same time being linked to the preceding link of the chain, and its free end welded to the other side of said one end of the bar 2, and the weld de-scaled. Fixing methods other than welding may be used, e.g. adhesive.
