Abstract

1,101,401. Wrapping machine for handling articles of different sizes. ROSE FORGROVE Ltd. 6 May, 1965 [7 May, 1964], No. 19017/64. Headings B8C and B8A. Wrapping articles.-In a machine in which an article 11 (Fig. 2) is pushed into a folding device 14, carrying a wrapper 27 before it, a nipping member 51 (Fig. 3) for holding the wrapper against the advancing face of the article, has a stroke which can be varied to suit articles of different sizes. In the embodiment described the nipping member 51 is carried by an arm 52 guided by a roller 66 engaging a guide 67 and reciprocated from a cam through a push rod 54, The guide 67 is initially moved by a linkage (68), (71), (Fig. 1, not shown) and a cam (70) towards the article (a ball of wool) to position determined by a stop set manually by a knob (99). After the wrapper 27 has been folded about the sides of the ball, the package is held between a fixed abutment 76 (Fig. 2) and a pusher while one side of the wrapper is folded under the ball by a reciprocating folder 73. The opposite side of the wrapper is folded under by a fixed ledge 78 as the pusher 74 pushes the ball between a pair of presser belts 77. During this action the stop 76 first moves with the package, and is then withdrawn laterally. Delivering wrappers.-The wrappers are withdrawn one at a time from a magazine 30 (Fig. 3) by a suction member 31 which delivers each wrapper to a pair of grippers 28 reciprocated by push rods 32 from cams, and opened and closed by rollers 46 engaging fixed cams 44. Applying gum.-A strip of gum is applied to each wrapper by an arm 47 (Fig. 2, not shown) oscillated into and out of a bath 48. Feeding articles. Delivering from conveyers.- The balls are lifted from cradles 12 (Fig. 2) on a conveyer chain 13 by cradles 16 reciprocating vertically on either side of the chain.
