32 Ciaims. (Cl. 53.-198) This invention relates to banding machines, and particularly to machines for placing bands around filler packs for loose-leaf notebooks and the like, and is an improvement over the structure claimed in the copending application of Arthur W. McClure, Serial No. 470,- 861, led November 24, 1954.
The only machines available for folding bands around packs of paper and gluing the bands to each other have operated step by step, the apparatus being brought to a complete stop for the folding and gluing of each of the bands. The starting and stopping of such an apparatus causes excessive wear due to the inertia of the parts, and the necessity for stopping the apparatus for the application o-f each band very greatly limits the speed and production of the apparatus.
An important object of the present invention is to` provide a continuously operating apparatus for folding bands around packs of paper, packages or any other articles, the complete folding and application of each band taking place while the pack or article, together with the band, moves continuously through the apparatus.
A further object is to provide such an apparatus having novel means for positioning the band and ller pack or other article with respect to each other so that the band will be wrapped centrally of the ller pack.
A further object is to provide such an apparatus hav ing a conveying mechanism for carrying successive bands through the apparatus and operative in conjunction with means for properly squaring each band transversely of the line of movement of the conveyor mechanism, and to provide the conveyor mechanism with means for gripping each band after it has been properly positioned relative to the conveying mechanism.
A further object is to provide novel means for controlling the band gripping devices so that each successive band will be effectively heid in position until after the banding operation has been completed, and for then releasing the gripping devices from each successive band for the discharging of successive banded filler packs from the apparatus.
A further object is to provide novel band folding means operative for folding the ends of each successive band over a ller pack as the latter, together with its associated properly positioned band, moves continuously through the apparatus.
A further object is to provide such a folding mechanism which is suspended over edges of the ller pack to lightly Contact therewith and with the band after the ends of the latter have been folded over the top of the pack, thus preventing substantial friction between the pack and band against the folding mechanism and consequently eliminating any drag on the paper which might mis-aline any of the sheets of the pack or the band.
A further object is to provide such an apparatus wherein the folding mechanism is provided with novel means for compensating for the slight variations in the dirnension of the pack which otherwise would cause lthe -band to tit somewhat loosely around a iiller pack having a 2,903,83l Patented Sept. l5, 1959 dimension between the folds of the band slightly less than the predetermined dimension for which the apparatus is set.
A further object is to provide, in combination with the apparatus referred to, means for feeding successive bands to the apparatus in such a way `as to facilitate their engagement with the band positioning means associated with the band conveying mechanism.
A further object is to provide novel cam-operated means for feeding successive bands to the apparatus.
A further object is to provide a mechanism of the character just referred to, wherein a cam device moves in one direction a rocker arm which operates to feed the paper while a spring moves the rocker arm in the other direction, and to provide easily operable means for rendering the spring inoperative for moving the rocker arm, to arrest the feeding of bands to the apparatus, when desired.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
