Abstract

1,100,902. Jet propulsion plant in aircraft. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. 16 June, 1965 [16 June, 1964], No. 24941/64. Heading B7G. [Also in Division F1] The invention relates to a jet propulsion power plant for aircraft which comprises a pair of gas turbine engines disposed side-by-side, each engine having a propulsion nozzle projecting laterally from the side of the engine remote from the other engine and a jet pipe terminating in a rear propulsion nozzle. In Fig. 1 the starboard engine 10 has a jet pipe formed in two parts 14, 15 which crosses over the power plant centre line 18 and terminates in a propulsion nozzle 19. This engine also has a propulsion nozzle 22 which receives air from a low pressure compressor of the engine by way of a plenum chamber 21 and stub duct 20. The port engine 10 likewise has a jet pipe formed in two parts 12, 13 which crosses over the centre line 18 and terminates in a propulsion nozzle 17; this engine also has a propulsion nozzle 23 similar to the nozzle 22 of the starboard engine. The jet pipes of the two engines cross each other by means of a cross-over unit 16 which comprises a straight-through duct 30 of cylindrical form which interconnects the parts 12, 13 of the jet pipe of the port engine and a bifurcated duct 31 which passes around the cylindrical duct 30 and interconnects the parts 14, 15 of the jet pipe of the starboard engine, Fig. 3. The cross-over unit is of cylindrical form and carries a pair of mounting trunnions 33 for the jet pipe structure. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4, 5, (not shown), one path through the cross-over unit comprises a passage through the cylindrical duct 37 also a passage through a pair of bifurcated ducts 38 while the second path through the unit comprises a passage through a pair of bifurcated ducts 39. The four nozzles 17, 19, 22, 23 are all angularly adjustable so that the direction of thrust may be varied. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 962,886.
