Abstract

1378943 Jet propulsion nozzles TEXTRON Inc 14 Feb 1972 [14 June 1971] 6738/72 Heading F1J The invention relates to a jet propulsion nozzle which is adapted to be silenced in operation. The nozzle comprises an externally aerofoil-shaped plenum chamber 10 which is formed at its trailing edge 18 with a plurality of discharge orifices 12 through which jet gases from the pressurized fluid conduit 14 discharge in the form of jets 22, the arrangement being such that a flow of ambient air is induced to flow in the form of a sheath 20 around each jet stream whereby the noise of the jet is attenuated. In a second embodiment two parallel rows of orifices are provided adjacent the trailing edge, the orifices being in staggered relation and being inclined at a small angle whereby the jet streams diverge. In a third embodiment three rows of orifices are provided. The fluid-pressure may be up to 10 p.s.i. and the diameter of the Orifices 0À040 inch; the rate of flow through the orifices must be greater than Mach 0À5 but not greater than Mach 1.
