Abstract

1,100,600. Making batteries. VARTA A.G. 5 Sept., 1966 [11 Sept., 1965], No. 39629/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division H1] A battery is made by arranging a stack of spaced porous electrodes in a mould and embedding their edges in a hermetically sealing and insulating material such as a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin, by centrifugal casting. In the embodiment shown in the Figure, electrodes 4, 7, 9 and 10, separated from each other by nets 6, 8 and 11 and from end covers 3 and 14 by nets 5 and 12, are located in a cylindrical centrifugal mould 1, 2 by rods 16. Cores, not shown, which extend radially inwardly from rods 16 are located between each pair of electrodes. Liquid material is then poured into the mould and the mould spun so as to form a peripheral casing 15 in which the edges of the electrodes are embedded. Rods 16 are subsequently removed and the radial cores dissolved out so that channels are formed in the casing through which the working material can be introduced between the electrodes.
