Abstract
1,100,036. Air preheaters. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD. 5 July, 1966 [20 July, 1965], No. 30869/65. Heading F4S. In an air preheater, pressurized air passing over upright ceramic tubes is heated by combustion gases at atmospheric pressure passing through the tubes and generated by an independent combustion system, each tube being formed in lengths with abutting flanges on the adjacent ends of two lengths. As shown, the tube lengths are arranged end-to-end with a spigot and socket connection 15 and with abutment flanges 13, 14 which may be coated with a viscous sealing material such as glass or quartz. A similar joint is formed between the lower end of the tube and a lower tube plate 22. The upper ends of the tubes pass through clearance holes in the upper tube plate 32 the seal being effected by a ring 30 slidable on the tube. The relatively high air pressure, e.g. six or seven atmospheres assists in maintaining the tube joint seals. The clearance hole in the upper tube plate is such as to permit passage therethrough of the tube section flanges 13, 14 for assembly purposes. The invention is intended for the preheating of combustion air in an M.H.D. generator plant, the air being preheated by the generator waste gases before passing to the recuperator tubes the hot gases for which are generated in a separate combustion unit (41, Fig. 2).
