Abstract

1288531 Pipe joints AUGUST THYSSENHUTTE AG 8 Jan 1971 [13 Jan 1970] 1089/71 Heading F2G [Also in Division F4] In an expansion joint between at least a pair of parts 7, 8 of a multipart tuyere feed pipe, a clearance gap contains a flexible refractory sealing member 38 and a bellows 19 seals the joint hermetically. As shown, the expansion compensator part 7 comprises a tapered pipe 16 which projects into a recess 37 in the part 8 providing sufficient clearance to allow for manufacturing tolerances and to accommodate thermal expansion. The seal 38 may be of asbestos, as may a further seal ring 31 between flanges 20, 21 which couple the downstream end of bellows 19 to the pipe 8. The bellows has a refractory lining 39 adjacent the expansion joint to protect the bellows, which may be of metal, from escaping hot-air blast, for example if the seal 38 is damaged. A part 5 of the feed pipe connected to a hot-air supply manifold (3) (Fig. 1, not shown) (see Divisions F3-F4), a spacer 6, expansion compensator 7, the part 8, a connector bend (9) and a nozzle (10) all comprise sheet metal jackets lined internally with thick refractory material, e.g. fireclay. The spacer 6 is coupled to adjacent parts 5, 7 by flat flanges 18, 34 allowing ready dissembly if it is desired to remove the compensater part 7.
