Abstract

972,361. Flexible pipes; pipe couplings. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. July 16, 1963 [July 25, 1962], No. 28532/62. Headings F2G and F2P. A flexible pipe 10 is provided with an abrasion-resistant lining comprising a plurality of tubular sections 11 of refractory material, e.g. ceramics, arranged with a male member on one section rockably interfitting with a female member on the adjacent member, wherein the male and female members are plain or curved frusto conical ends of the sections. The sections are surrounded by a spring 14 having between one and two convolutions per section. The pipe may be rubber or corrugated metal. One end of the rubber pipe may be flanged, 15, to aid connection to a lance and may receive a flanged sleeve 16 the inner end of which is frusto-conical in shape to receive the end section of the lining. The other end may be flanged 22 and also receive a flanged sleeve 24, one end of which supports the spring 14 and receives the end lining section and is arranged to slide on a liner-retaining tube 27, one end of which supports the end lining section and the other end of which, 29, abuts a step in the inner wall of an outer sleeve 31 surrounding the sleeve 24. The outer end of the sleeve 31 has a flange 32 and the inner end has an enlarged bore receiving a sealing gland 35 compressed by a further sleeve 38 connected by a bolt 41 to a flange 39 of the outer sleeve 31. An extension of the bolt passes through the flanges 22, 23 of the tube 10 and sleeve 24, respectively and is spring-loaded to tension the tube but not the lining. The corrugated metal sleeve is welded or brazed at one end to a plate carrying a supporting flange (Fig. 2, not shown) and at the other end is welded or brazed to a flanged sliding sleeve 24 also carrying a supporting flange 58. The sleeve 24 is spring-loaded to slide on a liner 27, the sealing arrangement 35, 38, 39, 41 being as described above. In this embodiment the sleeve 24 does not enter the end of the flexible pipe 10.
