Abstract

1,099,488. Tapping gas cartridges. SOCIETE INDUSTRIELLE POUR LA DIFFUSION D'EQUIPEMENT ET DE MATERIEL " SIDEMAT." Oct. 25, 1965 [Oct. 24, 1964], No. 45131/65. Heading B8T. A device for opening and resealing gas cartridges comprises a valve head 13 locked by a pin 17 to a base 5, the valve head having a needle 14 which may be screwed inwardly and outwardly, a first clamping arm 1 attached to one side of the base and connected to a second clamping arm 2 having a transverse portion at its free end which engages a groove 9 in the opposite side of the base. The valve head 13 is initially unscrewed to its fullest extent and then the base is placed on the cartridge 4 with a sealing ring 19 engaging the top 4b of the cartridge. The clamping arms 1, 2 are then folded around the cartridge and a clip 11 pivoted by a pin 10 pulls the transverse portion of the arm 2 into the groove 9 by a camming action. Wing portions of the clip 11 pass either side of the cylindrical body of the valve head and are locked in position by a skirt 12 when the valve head is screwed down, thereby causing the needle 14 to pierce the top 4b of the cartridge. The relative positions of the skirt 12, needle 14 and the length of the clip 11 are so determined that the device cannot be initially clamped on to the cartridge if the needle 14 projects below the lower face of the base 5. Vents in a sleeve 15 and in the base 5 align on unscrewing the valve head 13 to give an indication of any residual gas left in the cartridge before the device is completely removed.
