Abstract

A tube or rod connecting device is adapted to be rigidly connected to the end portion of a first, 11, of a pair of rods or tubes which are to be connected, the device comprising a pair of jaws 12 13 to engage and releasably retain the second rod or tube 20 of the pair, one jaw 12 being fixed and the other 13 pivoted to the fixed jaw, one jaw having a peg 16 which extends toothwise from it towards the other jaw and protrudes into a corresponding hole in the second rod or tube when the second rod or tube is engaged by the jaws, means being provided to clamp the jaws in engagement with the second rod or tube when it is engaged thereby. As shown the device is provided with a cap 10 which fits over the rod or tube 11 and is riveted, screw threaded or welded to the end portion of the rod or tube 11; the jaw 12 consists of two like pieces of plate metal welded to the cap 10 in spaced relation, the spacing being maintained by a block 15 and the peg 16. The jaw 13 is pivoted to the jaw 12 between these two pieces by a pin 14 and it has a pad 18 through which it engages the rod or tube 20. The means for securing the jaws in the engaged position is a screw 17 which is threaded through a tapped hole in the block 15 to engage a facing 13c of the jaw 13. The two rods or tubes can constitute part of gymnastic apparatus, the rod or tube 11 being horizontal with a said device at each end and there being two rods or tubes 20 one engaged by each device. In a modification instead of using a screw 17 as the clamping means, a plunger, spring loaded into co-operation with the facing and arrange for manual withdrawal, can be provided.
