Abstract

1,097,400. Valves. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Aug. 5, 1966 [Sept. 3, 1965; Jan. 4, 1966; April 14, 1966], Nos. 37674/65, 308/66 and 16410/66. Heading F2V. A valve actuator is movable in a first direction to actuate a first valve, whose output is dependent on the position of the actuator and is movable in a second direction through a gate " from a point in the first movement to actuate a second valve. In the embodiment shown, a handle 53 is rotatable about an axis 45 by movement through a slot 70 and rotates a member 41 formed with a cam surface 43. Such movement varies the loading of a spring 10 of a well-known type of self-lapping valve 2. A sleeve 60 surrounds the rod 52 of handle 53 and is loaded by a spring 61. The end of the sleeve is bevelled and sides of slot 70 are similarly bevelled. When the handle is in the position 73, it may be moved into slot 71 on withdrawing the sleeve 60. Movement in the first part of the slot causes the handle to pivot about 47 to actuate the second valve, which may be an on-off or self-lapping valve. If a further part of slot 71 is provided, i.e. parallel to slot 70, movement of the handle along this part actuates the valve 2. In a modification, the slot 70 may be lengthened and an adjustable stop provided normally preventing movement in the extension but allowing movement when the stop is moved manually or in response to fluid pressure. The handle may be provided with a pawl-and-ratchet.
