Abstract

1,097,321. Slings. HOUILLERES DU BASSIN DE LORRAINE. March 19, 1965 [March 20, 1964], No. 11729/65. Heading B8H. A self-tightening sling comprises a cable 1 having a loop 2 at each end and extending through a duct 4 in a block 5, the latter having a U-shaped locking bolt 8 for releasably fastening one of the loops to the block. The duct 4 has an upper portion in the form of a truncated cone and a lower portion which is cylindrical and extends at an angle to the upper portion so that when the cable is under tension the block is frictionally locked to the cable. The sling may have a link chain fixed to one of the loops 2 to increase the sling length; any link of the chain may be fastened to the block 5 by the bolt 8. The block 5 has a slot 7, Figs. 2, 3 and 4 (not shown), for receiving the loop 2 or the chain link to be fastened and has passages 10, 11 through which slidingly extend the limbs of the bolt 8. One limb is shorter than the other which is formed at its free end as a striking head 9. The short limb extends across the slot 7 and is disengaged from the loop or chain link by the head 9 being struck or a tool being inserted between the bend of the bolt 8 and the block 5.
