1,097,232. Incandescent gas fires; heating air. OATLEY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. May 13, 1965 [May 14, 1964], No. 20028/64. Headings F4S and F4W. A radiant/convector gas fire capable of burning town gas or gas of a higher calorific value comprises an outer casing 10, a hot gas chamber 14 leading to flue ducts 15, an air heater 18 disposed rearwardly of three radiants 12 which are supported by a main frame 11 above and spaced from a burner assembly 13, mixing tubes 25 of which lie at right angles or obliquely to the plane of the radiants. The burner assembly comprises a separate aerated burner 24 for each radiant, each burner having a mixing tube 25 comprising a flared inlet 34 holding a gas injector 26 connected to a supply conduit 27 which is internally partitioned to give two chambers 29, 30, one of which is connected to the two end mixing tubes while the other is connected to the central mixing tube. Air to inlets 34 of each mixing tube is manually regulated by moving a plate 46 with slots 47 over a fixed apertured plate 45, Fig. 5 (not shown), the air and gas mixture passing through a Venturi 35 to a straight slightly upwardly inclined pipe 36 diverging from the Venturi throat and connected to an upwardly curved forward end 37 terminating in a flared outlet 38 of the same shape as the bottom opening 41 of the radiant it serves, the outlet 38 being covered by a perforate ceramic or metallic closure plate 39 below a combustion chamber 40. Convection air passes through a grill 21, through spaces between pipes 36 extending across a passage 20, upwardly rearwardly of the radiants, around flues 15 and thence through an outlet grille 23. In another embodiment, the partitioned gas conduit 27 may be replaced by separate conduits, or there may be one conduit supplying the two outer mixing tube injectors and another supplying the central mixing tube injector.
