In a guillotine shears or a bending press of the type having a gauging stop 8 which is carried by two carriages 9 which can move synchronously along two lead screws 11, the lead screws 11 can be moved axially by a few millimeters against the action of elastic means such as helical springs or elastic washers so that the workpiece does not jam against the gauging stop 8. As cescribed a guillotine shears has a fixed blade 6, a reciprocating blade 3, hydraulic clamping jacks 7, and has lead screws 11 having pistons 13 formed on their rearward ends. The screws 11 are urged forwardly to their gauging position by springs or elastic washers 15 and can be moved rearwardly by supplying pressure fluid to the cylinder 14 through an entry port 16 after the work has been clamped by the jacks 7.
