In a guillotine machine of the type in which the movable blade 24 is mounted on a carrier 11 which is supported on pivots 12 and in which the blade, which extends in the direction of the length of the pivots, is inclined vertically with respect to the horizontal plane through the axis of the pivots, the surface 25 of the carrier or of a packing strip adapted to be secured to the carrier, against which the blade is secured, is machined or formed to conform to a cylindrical shape having its axis coincident with the axis of the pivots 12. The surface 25 has the form obtained by machining it longitudinally of the carrier and at the same time moving the carrier angularly about the axis of its pivots. The blade 24 is swung towards the fixed blade 27 by means of hydraulic ram cylinders 16 while the return stroke is effected by hydraulic rams 17. The work is held on a table 18 by means of a bar 20 and jacks 21. Back stops 22 are operated by means of mechanism 23.
