Abstract

1,095,245. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 27, 1966 [Oct. 28, 1965], No. 43158/66. Heading G6C. A fuel element comprises an external sheath enclosing a stack of fuel pellets which are of greater diameter than height, the rigidity of the fuel element being increased by longitudinal blades integral with the outer surface of the sheath. In order to restrict the temperature at the centre of the pellets, a thin disc of metal, e.g. magnesium, is disposed between each pair of adjacent pellets. Preferably, each metal disc has a diameter slightly less than that of the pellets so as to produce between each two successive pellets a circular groove enabling the sheath to be anchored to the fuel by the application of an external hydrostatic pressure. The sheath is provided with cooling fins distributed in parallel sectors in chevron fashion. The longitudinal blades are disposed between certain of the fin sectors and centre the fuel element within either a reactor fuel channel or an annular graphite supporting jacket.
