Abstract

960, 813. Nuclear fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. April 19, 1963 [April 20, 1962; July 20, 1962], No. 15560/63. Heading G6C. A device for centring a fuel element provided with an external sheath comprising fins arranged in herringbone form in relation to an annular structure surrounding the element is composed of at least three centring blades, of which the centre planes are directed towards the axis of the element, and which are fast with the structure and in contact with the sheath, or vice versa. As shown in Fig. 7, the fuel element 2 comprises a tube 4 of fuel material, e.g. pure or lightly alloyed uranium, closed at each end by a uranium pellet 6 and enclosed in a sheath 8 on the outside surface of which are fins 17 arranged in series forming herringbone patterns with a longitudinal groove 18 between each two successive series. There are three centring blades 20 engaging three alternate grooves 18. The sheath 8 may, for example, be of Mg-Zr alloy of low Zr content and is closed by welded plugs 14 which may, for example, be of Mg-Mn alloy of very low Mn content. The element is supported within an annular sleeve 26 to form a fuel cartridge by means of a central plug 30 suspended in the sleeve by a series of crossed wires 32. These wires have sufficient flexibility to damp the shocks to which the element 2 is subjected during loading and unloading operations. In this construction, the blades 20 are prevented from rotating within the sleeve 26 by being engaged within longitudinal slots 34 in the inside wall of the sleeve. In addition, the blades 20 are prevented from slipping in a direction parallel to the axis of the element by means of teeth 24 integral with the blades which engage in radial recesses 36 of greater depth than the corresponding slots 34. Alternatively, the blades 20 may be directly welded to the sheath 8 or to the sleeve 26. Since herringbone-type sheaths eliminate the aerodynamic forces which tend to turn the fuel element within the coolant channel, the gas flows which they induce being symmetrical in pairs, the centring blades 20 have to exert no opposing torque and it is sufficient for them to have adequate rigidity in the longitudinal and radial directions. In order to reduce the neutron absorbtion, the blades are provided with recesses 22 either of semicircular, trapezoidal or rectangular form, or as simple holes in the blade. Advantageously, the blades 20 are tapered inwardly at their edges engaged in the longitudinal'grooves 18 of the sheath.
