Abstract

1279447 Fuel elements GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 25 Sept 1969 [26 Sept 1968] 47295/69 Heading G6C A fuel assembly comprises a plurality of spaced, elongate fuel elements, a member containing burnable poison being provided within the assembly, the nuclear fuel of the fuel elements comprising an initial first fissile fuel and an initial second fissile fuel having greater fission cross-section than the first fissile fuel, the second fissile fuel being preferentially concentrated in at least the parts of the fuel elements adjacent the burnable poison, and the first fissile fuel being preferentially concentrated in at least some other parts of the fuel elements. Such a fuel assembly comprising spaced, parallel fuel rods 12 has the burnable poison in one of these fuel rods, viz. fuel rod 12<SP>1</SP>, and Pu-containing fuel in those fuel rods 12<SP>11</SP> surrounding the fuel rod 12<SP>1</SP> where the Pu will be within one neutron diffusion length of the burnable poison. The remainder of the fuel is U. Because of its greater fission cross-section, the initial power density in the Pu-containing fuel tends to be greater than in the U fuel, which helps to overcome the initial depressive effect of the adjacent burnable poison. Furthermore, the greater absorption cross-section of Pu causes it to deplete more rapidly than U which aids in preventing power peaking later in the fuel cycle. Satisfactory results are obtained when the fuel rods 12<SP>11</SP> contain about 1À2 atom per cent fissile Pu and 1À8 atom per cent fissile U. Where the fuel rod 12<SP>1</SP> contains the burnable poison only in one particular axial zone, then the Pu need be contained only in the same axial zone of the fuel rods 12<SP>11</SP>.
