Abstract
1528267 Fuel elements INSTITUTE OF NUCLEAR ENERGY RESEARCH ATOMIC ENERGY COUNCIL 19 Nov 1976 48312/76 Heading G6C A fuel element for use with a water-moderated nuclear reactor comprises a bundle of fuel rods and at least one Be-containing rod. The Be may be present as element or compound, and acts not only as neutron moderator but also as fast neutron multiplier. The use of such fuel elements serves to reduce the D 2 O inventory in heavy water reactors or to reduce the necessary U-235 enrichment in light water reactors. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, a typical CANDU 19-rod fuel element has the central rod replaced by a Zircaloy-2 sheathed Be rod of the same size. The same reactivity is obtained with this modified fuel element but with a reduction in lattice pitch equivalent to a swing of 9% in the D 2 O moderator inventory, when used in a pressurized heavy water reactor, or a swing of 16À5% in the D 2 O moderator inventory, when used in a boiling light water reactor. Both these reactors are of the CANDU type, viz. the Douglas Point and Gentilly reactors respectively. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, a CANDU 28-pin fuel element has twelve additional Be rods inserted in the interstitial positions shown. When used in a CANDU heavy water reactor, viz. the Pickering reactor, a saving of 9À78% of the D 2 O moderator inventory can be achieved. In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), a 19-pin fuel element with 1À95 w./o. U-235 enrichment has six smaller Be rods inserted into the bundle, resulting in a possible reduction of 0À1 w./o. in the enrichment while still yielding the same neutron multiplication factor.
