Abstract

1,095,102. Sparking plugs. CHAMPION SPARK PLUG CO. Feb. 18, 1966, No.7334/66. Heading F1B. A sparking plug has an electrode part 25 disposed in a nose bore of the insulator, the electrode part including a cast body of a material having a thermal conductivity of at least 0À5 and means 21 disposed within an annular space between the body and the nose bore wall 20 structurally integral with the body and out of contact with and spaced from the nose bore wall by no more than about 0À001 inch the means comprising a material having a relatively low thermal conductivity in comparison with that of the body and being effective to decrease the rate of heat transfer between the body and the nose bore wall in an amount sufficient to prevent stressing of the nose bore wall by the body when the plug is heated in service to an extent sufficient to cause insulator cracking. The electrode part 25 may be made of silver, copper, gold or aluminium. The means 21 disposed in the annular space may comprise a sleeve of metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, nickel alloys, iron, molybdenum and chromium. The means 21 may comprise a split sleeve. As shown the plug includes a spring pressed resistor 28. Substantially equivalent results can be obtained by what may be termed a reversal of the air gap relative to the split sleeve.
