Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A braking roller 10 for roller conveyers comprises a shaft 5 and a roller body 1 freely rotatably mounted thereon. The roller body 1 is provided with a brake drum 2 which has connected thereto an annular magnet 3. A disc 4, preferably of copper, integral with a cam 6 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 5 and is urged to rotate by the magnetic coupling when the roller body 1 is rotated. The cam 6 co-operates with a pair of pivotally mounted brake shoes 7 which are held in contact with the cam by a spring (Fig. 2, not shown). Rotation of the cam urges the brake shoes 7 into contact with the brake drum 2, the braking force being proportional in magnitude to the speed of rotation of the roller body. In a further embodiment the roller body is provided with a pair of pivotally mounted flyweights which, when the roller body is rotated co-operate with a separate rotatable member on the shaft (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). The separate rotatable member actuates a piston and cylinder assembly which delivers hydraulic fluid along the shaft to a pair of cylinders, pistons in the cylinders being urged against the inner surface of the roller body.
