Abstract
1,093,224. Cooling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 23, 1964 [Dec. 10, 1963], No. 48832/63. Heading G6C. In a liquid sodium-cooled nuclear reactor, the sodium is continuously monitored to detect the concentration of an impurity, soluble sodium oxide. The coolant flows through an orifice and by the automatic control of both the sodium temperature and the flow rate through the orifice the oxide precipitation at the orifice is adjusted. The automatic control is effected in correspondence with the orifice temperature and the flow rate. The impurity concentration, is indicated by the orifice temperature measured on a thermocouple. The sodium temperature at the orifice is varied in correspondence with the impurity concentration so as to regulate the amount of precipitation plugging at the orifice and hence to maintain a steady flow rate. The device is subjected to a constant degree of forced cooling which is offset by variable electrical heating. An electromagnetic flowmeter may be employed and the thermocouple may comprise two thermocouple materials shaped as an orifice.
