Abstract
950,896. Detecting neutrons. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 8,1962 [Nov. 17, 1961], No. 41217/61. Heading G6P. A neutron flux monitor comprises two elements which are of similar dimensions and densities but of materials of different neutron sensitivity so as to constitute a detecting element and a reference element, a capsule surrounding the elements to provide a uniform thermal environment for both elements, and a thermocouple for indicating any temperature differential between the two elements. In the drawing two dimensionally identical collars 11, 12 are carried by an alumina rod 13 and mounted in a stainless steel capsule 22 divided into two compartments by a stainless steel disc 14 which acts as a shield to prevent thermal or charged particle radiation passing between the two collars. Collar 11 is of a boron/ aluminium alloy and is heated more by neutrons than by aluminium collar 12, the heating effect of other radiation being substantially the same for both collars. The temperature difference between the two collars is measured by two thermocouples 17,19 connected in series to leads 16 which pass through bores in the rod 13 to bores in the top of the capsule. The capsule is suspended by a wire 27 and may be lowered into a nuclear reactor. The detecting element could contain lithium, cadmium, or nitrogen instead of boron, or, for detecting fast neutrons, could contain beryllium.
