Abstract

1,212,685. Radiation pyrometer. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 6, 1968 [March 13, 1967], No.11679/67. Heading G1A. A pyrometer comprises an evacuated chamber having a window, two radiation receiving discs within the chamber each disc having a thermocouple hot junction attached thereto, a thermally insulating screen disposed in the path of radiation to one of the discs, and means for comparing the outputs of the thermocouples and thus determining the value of the thermal radiation common to both receiving discs. The apparatus is used to measure the temperature of nuclear reactor fuel, the chamber being of titanium and having a sapphire or quartz window one part of which is covered with gold leaf to suppress the thermal radiation to one disc and the inside of the chamber being lined with gold leaf. The detector leads may be connected in series opposition and the connection may be made within the casing. In a modification in which the discs are staggered one behind the other a ceramic disc thermal screen is interposed between the two.
