[Also in Division G1] A safety device for mounting in an opening of a wall of a chamber for heating liquids for responding to temperature and fluid pressure changes in the chamber comprises an apertured carrier 1 supporting a housing 19 by a flexible annular seal 3 sealed at one of its peripheries to the carrier 1 and at the other of its peripheries with the housing 19, one side of the seal 3 being adapted to being exposed to fluid pressure in the heating chamber, a shearable member 15 retained by the carrier 1 and resisting displacement of the housing 19 up to a loading corresponding with a given maximum fluid pressure in the heating chamber. The device also comprises a settable operating rod 16 displaceable between an inner and an outer position in the housing 19, means for coupling the rod 16 to an abutment member 28 slidable in a thermal-sensitive element comprising a container 22, 23 supporting member 28 for sliding between an inner and an outer position in the container 22, 23 and hermetically containing a fusible substance 24 retaining member 28 in the inner position in the container, and the coupling means automatically securing rod 16 to member 28 when the rod 16 is being set to occupy the inner position in the housing and thereby set the device, and means for automatically uncoupling rod 16 from member 28 during displacement of rod 16 upon fusion of substance 24, a spring 39 for urging rod 16 into the outer position in the housing 19, and a spring 26 for urging member 28 into container 22, 23, spring 39 being adapted to overcome spring 26. The means for coupling rod 16 to member 28 comprises a pawl 30 resiliently urged into coupling engagement with member 28, and the means for uncoupling provides a surface 37 for guiding pawl 30 clear of member 28 during displacement of rod 16 upon fusion of substance 24. Following upon fusion of substance 24 and uncoupling of rod 16 from member 28, member 28 is urged into the inner position in container 22, 23 by spring 26 so that when substance 24 re-solidifies, the device can be reset by pressing in rod 16 so that it re-couples with member 28. Pin 16 has a longitudinal slot with ends 41, 42 surrounding wire 15. Movement of the control rod operates a switch.
