Abstract

1,204,799. Temperature responsive actuating elements. THERMAL HYDRAULICS CORP. Nov.7, 1968 [Nov.20, 1967], No.52889/68. Heading G1D. A temperature responsive actuator comprises a casing 10 having a pressure chamber 25 containing thermally expansible material, a piston 20 reciprocable in the chamber 25, a flexible diaphragm 30 interfittingly molded into grooves 14, 22 on the casing and piston respectively to seal one end of the chamber 25, and a seal 34 closing the opposite end of the chamber having an opening through which the piston moves when reciprocated. In the drawing the diaphragm 30 is shown distorted by the action of the thermally expansible material in the chamber 25, the piston 20 moving against the action of a spring 39. The disphragm 30 and seal 34 are preferably of rubber and a peripheral portion 33 of the diaphragm 30 provides a seal and insulation for electrical leads 27 for heating elements 26 disposed in the chamber 25. One end of the piston 20 carries a valve plug 24 co-operating with a valve seat 43 whilst the other end 21 of the piston contacts a switch button 51.
