Abstract

Textile material of synthetic or natural origin or paper is cut by a narrow jet of steam preferably with a pressure of at least 20 p.s.i.g. and with a temperature between 200 and 450 DEG C. The material may be fibres, filaments, yarns, fabrics, films or foamed sheet and the fabrics may be knitted, woven, or non-woven. In particular the material may contain thermoplastic material of which Examples are given. Waste yarns may be cut from a yarn support, e.g. a series of jets arranged at decreasing heights may be used to cut a thick layer of yarn from a beam at a single pass. Fabrics on a stenter or on a stainless steel conveyor belt may be cut or trtimmed by the jet. A method of producing the cutting jet and the cutting of particular materials are described.
