Drafting apparatus has means comprising a pointer and scale to indicate the loading of a top roller one of which can be adjusted to bring them into a desired relationship. Loading springs 8 extend between abutments 11 and 10 on a weighting arm 1 and a roller guidearm 3 pivoted to the weighting arm. The abutments 10 are cylindrical members carried by a plate 9 secured to the weighting arm by a threaded bolt 22; the lower abutments are studs fixed in the guide arm 3. In the front of the arm 1 is a casing 12 secured by pins 14 with a window 13 through which can be viewed a scale 21 movable along guides 15 and connected by a member 19 adjustably secured at 20 to the arm 3. Cooperating with the scale is a pointer 18 secured to an upper abutment. With a measuring roller &c. corresponding to drafting requirements at 3, the arms and abutments take up positions corresponding to the desired loading. The stud 20 is slackened so that the scale can be moved to a desired position relatively to the pointer, whereupon the stud is tightened and a working roller is substituted for the measuring roller. If the pointer does not indicate the loading indicated by the measuring-roller, the position of the plate 9 is adjusted by the screw 12 until it does; alternately, other rollers are placed at 5 until one is found which gives the same indication as the measuring-roller. So that the loading of each upper roller carried by the weighting arm 1 can be set at a desired value, the casing 12 may be arranged to be moved from one roller to another and to be connected to the corresponding guide arm. The graduations on the scale can be such that the loading value can be read off directly.
