Heading G4H In a system for measuring the displacement of a movable member a unit comprising a lamp 3, Fig. 1, a screen 8 and a photo-electric cell 5 is moved in unison with the movable member over a fixed scale 1 carrying evenly spaced (at intervals of 1mm.) marks, and those marks passed over by the unit are counted by a counter 10 to give a coarse measurement of the displacement of the movable member, and then, to give a fine measurement the photo-electric cell 5 is moved relatively to the movable member until it is in registration with an image 9 of one of the marks on the scale and this latter distance is measured by a further photo-electric cell unit 19, 21 which makes one hundred pulses for each graduation of the scale 1. It is stated that the system could be used as part of a closed-loop servo-positioning system, in which case if a displacement of say 169. 87 mm is required the photo-electric cell 5 is first moved relatively to the movable member by 0. 87 mm and then the movable member and the unit shown in Fig. 1 are moved over 169 marks on the scale 1 until the image 9 of the last mark is in registration with the photo-electric cell 5. A modification is described in Fig. 3 (not shown) which uses two separate counters.
