Abstract

1,092,119. Spray-producers. SONIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Dec. 18, 1964 [Dec. 23, 1963], No. 51677/64. Heading B2F. [Also in Divisions F4 and G5] An Apparatus for generating sonic pressure waves and atomizing a fluent material, e.g. liquid fuel, in a gaseous medium comprises a nozzle 20 having a passage 26, 28 supplied with pressure air by a tube 22 and with liquid fuel through holes 30 and discharging into a pulsator unit 44 comprising a cavity 48. The liquid fuel spreads around the inside of the nozzle, as indicated by dash lines 40, and forms a liquid walled converging-diverging nozzle which accelerates the air stream to a speed of mach 1. The pressure of the air and fuel stream emerging from the nozzle is lower than that of the ambient gas which is therefore drawn into the stream. The nozzle may comprise a converging section 26 followed by a straight section 28 as shown or it may comprise a straight section only or it may comprise a converging by a diverging section. Steps may be formed section follwed by a straight section followed in the sections. The liquid fuel is supplied by a tube 34 spaced from the air tube 22 by spherical spacers 38. The holes 30 are at 90 degree spacing. In a modification Fig. 4, 5 (not shown) the four holes for the liquid fuel are supplied by separate tubes and the flow rates of the intubes can be controlled independently to vary the shape of the spray pattern. The separate tubes may also supply different fluids. In another modification Figs. 6, 7, 8 (not shown) additional holes discharge liquid fuel into the spray as it leaves the nozzle and the diameter of pairs of opposed holes discharging liquid fuel into the centre of the nozzle may be different. In a further modification Figs. 9, 10 (not shown) the fuel is delivered through a fitting screwed into a threaded hole in the side wall of the nozzle upstream of a converging part of the air passage and in a further modification Fig. 11 (not shown) the fuel supply fitting is disposed upstream of a step in the air passage. In a further modification Figs. 12, 13, 14 (not shown) the fuel is delivered by four holes to a diverging discharge section of the nozzle and no fuel is delivered to the central section of the nozzle. The end of the pulsator unit is pointed.
