750,622. Jet propulsion nozzles. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. May 10, 1951 [June 16, 1950], No. 19539/53. Divided out of 750,601. Class 110(3) [Also in Group XXXIII] The propulsion nozzle 1 of an aircraft jet propulsion unit has a device for deflecting the jet stream from its normal axial flow direction, the device comprising selectively-controlled blowing or suction slots 3, 4, 5, 6 extending along fractions of the periphery of the jet nozzle in the vicinity of the nozzle outlet. Individual valve means 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b are provided for controlling the connection of the source of pressure or suction to each slot. Each slot may be connected to a source of pressure greater than that within the nozzle, for example a stage of the air compressor in the case of a gas turbine jet propulsion unit, or to a source of depression which may be suction slots. The jet stream may for example be deflected downwardly by connecting slot 3 to the pressure source and the opposite slot 4 to the suction. The downstream end of the nozzle has a convexly-curved portion 2 and spaced, annular curved deflector vanes 7 are disposed downstream of the part 2. The jet stream may be diverted for landing, the engine being kept running at normal speed, also for braking the aircraft and for steering. Specification 750,687 also is referred to.
