An electric thermal storage space heater 9 comprises four storage elements 10 arranged side by side, each element being formed from two steel blocks 11 clamped around an electric heating element 32. The blocks 11 are mounted at the top by bolts 17 in a channel sectioned beam 12 which may be formed from sections corresponding in length to each element 10, and which is releasably suspended by rods 19 from a surrounding angle iron frame 20, through a metal plate 27 and refractory insulating block 29. The storage elements 10 are surrounded by insulating slabs 31 and an inner casing 30 having both lower cold air inlet apertures 35 covered by slidable dampers 39, leading to the air channels formed between the adjacent storage elements 10, and also upper hot air outlet apertures 36 having a spaced deflecting outlet baffle (36a). A decorative outer casing 54 mounted on base 52 and provided with air inlet and outlet grilles 51, 50 respectively surrounds and is spaced from the inner casing 30. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the inner casing (30) and angle iron frame (20) are mounted in the cavity wall (43) of a house, having a layer of wall insulating material (44, 45) spaced from the back and side faces, a decorative panel (48) provided with inlet and outlet air grilles covering the front. If mounted in an interior wall, decorative panels will be used to cover both the front and back of the heater. Thermostatic switch gear (not shown) for " off peak " heating is mounted in the bottom space between the inner and outer casings.
