Abstract
A slot furnace for heating steel to floor temperatures, comprising: a housing; a chamber in said housing for receiving forging material; a refractory lining in said housing, the interior surface of which generally defines said chamber; a refractory hearth; a groove in the front part of the housing next to said hearth and having communication, through said covering, with said chamber, through which slot the forging material is introduced and removed; an electrical heating element on each side of said chamber, located inwardly adjacent to the respective side walls of said lining and outwardly adjacent to the sides of said sill and extending in a direction generally perpendicular to the plane of said slot; a refractory roof defining the upper part of said chamber, which penetrates inside it from each side wall to a line that is parallel to said electric heating elements and disposed between them and spaced above said groove; means for connecting said heating elements with a source of electrical energy; a temperature sensor, arranged next to said hearth; and means connected to said sensor, between said elements and said power source, for controlling the electric current applied to said elements in response to said sensor.
