Abstract
1,091,883. Billet piercing; extruding. MANNESMANN A.G. Nov. 25, 1964, No. 48015/64. Headings B3A and B3H. A composite billet for making an internally plated hollow workpiece by hot piercing comprises a body portion 3, Fig. 1, with a core 4 whose smallest cross-sectional area is less than three times the area of the body portion, the core having a conical enlargement 4a at one end. In the manufacture of an internally plated steel tube, the body 3 may be of mild steel and the core 4 of alloy steel. The core may extend completely through the body. A base disc 5 of any low quality metal is releasably secured to the body, e.g. by a simply holding weld. The heated billet is pierced by a punch 6 to form the hollow workpiece (7), Fig. 2 (not shown), and this workpiece is subsequently formed into a tube in a pilger mill or an extrusion press. A specific example is given.
