Abstract

An austenitic alloy steel is given a fine grain size by adding to the casting stream a powdered compound containing nitrogen. The steels may be Ni-Cr or Ni-Cr-Mo stainless steels or manganese steels and the added compound may be Cr, Mn or Fe nitrides, calcium cyanamide, high nitrogen Fe-Cr or Ni having nitrogen absorbed thereon (e.g. by heating powdered Ni in an atmosphere of ammonia). The powdered compound may be added in an inert gas (A or N2) stream.
