A base, e.g. of an incandenscent or discharge lamp, comprises a solid glass body carrying a glass tube supporting the filament assembly and sealed to the lamp envelope (Fig. 1), and having two or more support pins 10 projecting laterally from the peripheral surface thereof to engage a bayonet lampholder, and exposed contacts 11 on the end surface thereof connected to or forming part of lead-in conductors sealed through the glass body. Longitudinal recesses 12a and 12b (or 12, in Figs. 3 and 5), may be formed in the peripheral surface of the body. The contacts may be in the form of solder or a plate connected to the lead-in conductors (Fig. 6 and 7), or the free end (15, Fig. 10) of each conductor, may extend to the exterior of the lamp and be turned back and sealed into the body so that the portion between the sealed parts serves as the contact, and said portion may be in the form of a flattened loop (Fig. 15). The two pins 10 may be provided by the exposed ends of a metal rod embedded in the glass body or they may be formed separately, e.g. by L-shaped members having one limb embedded in the glass body. When the pins are formed separately, they may be used as contacts for additional filaments or electrodes in the lamp. The pins 10 are located in position while the glass base is soft, either during or after its shaping.
