Abstract
1,089,758. Rolling. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. Aug. 23, 1965 [Aug. 24, 1964], No.36035/65. Heading B3M. A rolling mill comprises stands, 18, 20, Figs. 1. 4 whose roll axes are inclined at approximately 45 degrees to the horizontal, the shafts 78, 80 of each pair of rolls 36 being adjustable relative to each other, and gear drive means, which do not include universal joints, for driving the roll shafts. The roll shafts are driven by a motor 22, Fig. 1, through a gear type speed increaser 28, and through shafts 30, 32. In a modification shafts 30, 32 are driven by separate motors, or each stand may be provided with its own motor. Each stand 18, 20 comprises a housing 38, Fig. 3, having short drive shafts 40, 42 journalled therein, the shafts having intermeshing gears 46, 48, Fig. 5, which also mesh with gears 84, 86 carried on roll shafts 78, 80. The latter are journalled in eccentric sleeves 74, 76, Figs. 3 and 4 which sleeves are rotatable so as to vary the distance between the shafts and therefore the pass of the rolls 36 secured thereto, by a left- and righthand screw and nuts 110, 102 and 104. Shaft 110 is rotated by a hand wheel 138 through bevel gears 132, 134, and gears 126, 124, 120, 118, and a graduated disc 140 is provided to indicate the angular displacement of the sleeves. The drive from shafts 30, 32 is transmitted to the roll shafts through bevel gears 52, 50, Fig. 3, the pairs of such gears for each stand having different ratios so as to impart gradually increasing rotational speeds to the work rolls to prevent sagging of the stock between the stands. The rolls can be mounted in replaceable cartridges, 66, Fig. 3, which are secured in a cartridge casing 54 by bolts 96. In a modification, the roll shafts 150, 152, and the intermediate drive shafts 162, 164 are contained in a common housing 142, Figs. 8-11. Shaft 162 is driven by a shaft 174 connected to a motor, and the eccentric sleeves 146 in which the roll shafts are journalled can be adjusted to vary the pass by a right-and left-handed screw 188, and nuts 180, 184.
