Abstract

1,088,902. Joint-making packing; pipe couplings. PLESSEY U.K. Ltd. May 28, 1965 [June 4, 1964; March 26, 1965], Nos. 23164/64 and 13027/65. Headings F2B and F2G. A sealing ring comprises a carbon ring 8 secured by shrinkage in a metal ring 11a. The metal ring, which may be of a nickel alloy, is made with an inside diameter which is slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the carbon ring so that it may be shrunk on to the latter. The metal ring may have a flange 11b as shown or just be in the form of a cylindrical sleeve. As shown in Fig. 3, the sealing ring is arranged to seal a pipe coupling connecting two pipes 1, 2 the carbon ring 8 being urged, by springs 10 in a shell 3, into contact with a part-spherical member 5 secured on an extension 4 of the pipe 2; the member 5 is sealed on the extension by means of sealing rings 12, 22, 23 constructed as shown in Fig. 2, the rings 22, 23 being urged by springs 24, 25 into contact with flanges formed on the member 5. A second carbon sealing ring is located in the shell 3 for sealing contact with the member 5. In order to balance the pressure in the pipes tending to separate the coupling, the pressure is leaked, via a bleed passage 17, through holes 16 in the member 5 and a collar 28 so as to act on a flange 15 secured to the pipe 2; the pressure on the opposite side of the flange is exhausted to atmosphere through a channel 18 and a port 19 leading therefrom. The various parts of the above coupling may be screwed or bolted together in order to facilitate assembly. In a further construction (Fig. 6), two coupling flanges are provided with part-spherical surfaces 133 adapted to co-operate with sealing rings 127 located in a shell member 124 by thrust bushes 128 urged apart by springs 129. The coupling flanges are held together by means of spherical-ended screwed members 131, 132. A further embodiment incorporating some of the features shown in Fig. 3 and in the latter construction is also disclosed (Fig. 7).
