A heat shrinkable prestretched skirt 3, e.g. of polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride, is attached to the circular top 1 of a stopper 2, and when such assembly is applied to a bottle the skirt is heated and shrinks on to the bottle neck. The skirt is removed from the stopper before opening the bottle. The skirt may be attached to the stopper by a groove 1b, or it may be attached by welding or gluing; it may be weakened by perforations to facilitate its removal.
