Abstract
1,087,707. Shaft couplings. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. June 27, 1966 [July 8, 1965], No. 28921/65. Heading F2U. In a final drive shaft assembly for a motor vehicle the end of the differential input pinion shaft 26 has a splined connection 22 with the output yoke 20 of a Hooke's joint and is retained in axial position by a pair of semicircular clips 32 engaged in a circumferential groove 34 at the end of the shaft and held against a shoulder 36 in the yoke by a nut 38 carried by the shaft. The latter is supported by a bearing 46 in the differential housing 44, the bearing being preloaded by a second nut 48 on the shaft 6, which also retains in position a cover plate 50 for an oil seal 52. In a second arrangement, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the shaft 6 is secured to a pair of jaw-like retainer plates (54) bolted to a flange on the yoke.
